Improve your ability to see compositions. Discover ways to find the potentional for a photograph, in any situation, and take the next step in the development of your photographic eye, during this, in-person workshop with photographer Sean Black at the Leica Store in Los Angeles.
Combing a lecture format with a hands-on field experience, this full day session will start with a review of the rules of composition and highlight key building blocks of photography and design.
Taking inspiration from John Szarkowski’s seminal essay The Photographer’s Eye, the group will discuss how considering this essay can have an practical impact on your approach to creating images.

After a morning presentation and discussion, we will embark on a visual quest, designed to put photographic theory into practice.
Immersed in the beauty and vibrancy of the upscale WeHo neighborhood, students will seek out the drama of light and shadow. Emphasis will be placed on working manually and adjusting exposure, while also looking more closely at the details of the world around us.
The program will conclude with a final Q&A with Sean and a chance to review some of the images created. Sean will be leading this course with the Leica SL & SL2 Systems.
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS WORKSHOP?
A perfect follow-up to Leica Akademie’s Photography Fundamentals, this intermediate workshop is geared for students who are comfortable navigating the basics of the camera and interested in elevating their images to the next level by putting to use the building blocks of photography line, shape and form along with exposing for highlights and shadows.
This course is the perfect bridge course for students planning to attend master level workshops online or in-person with the Leica Akademie.
A Leica Camera is not required for this class. Students must have a basic or intermediate operational knowledge of their camera. An assortment of Leica Cameras will be available on loan to try out. Attendance is strictly limited to 12 students max, so be sure to sign up at your earliest opportunity.

A Senior Editor with A&U: America’s AIDS Magazine, for a decade, this opportunity allowed for the photographing and interviewing of numerous luminaries in the fights against HIV/AIDS including Sheryl Lee Ralph, MJ Rodriguez, Alicia Keys, John Waters, Debra Messing, Chloë Sevigny, Kylie Minogue, Cleve Jones, Greg Louganis and many more; thus growing the publication’s mission of collecting, archiving, publishing and distributing the art, activism, and current events emanating from the AIDS pandemic.
Sean’s work has been published and exhibited internationally in Variety, LA Times, USAToday, People Magazine, NBC News, GQ Brazil, Ebony, The NewStatesman, Stern Magazine, Playbill, Springer Medizin, HIV Plus/The Advocate, Positively Aware and others.
Currently a full-time Lecturer at the University of Miami, Sean recived an a MFA in 2013. In addition to an MA in Photography from California State University San Bernardino (2009) and a BS degree in Information Technology from Barry University (2004).
They were recently awarded a grant creating a photo campaign for trans women for UNAIDS Brazil and the Brazilian Ministry of Health through The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) an innovative partnership of 11 United Nations (UN) Cosponsors including UNICEF, UNESCO, UN Women, WHO and The World Bank.
Upcoming exhibitions include the LGBTQ+ Santo Domingo Biennial 2022 in the Dominican Republic by invitation and Leica Gallery Los Angeles paired alongside renowned photographer Anthony Friedkin and his seminal The Gay Essay work.
