Overview:

July 19-21, 2024, join photographer and educator Stella Johnson for theInternational Sand Sculpting Festival at America’s First Public Beach, the three-mile-long Revere Beach.

Incredible sculptures, food trucks and fireworks are just some of the weekend highlights. In addition, Revere Beach is renowned for its’ local cast of characters lounging on the oldest boardwalk in the US and also for the best ‘lobsta’ rolls at Kelly’s. It is 30-minutes outside of Boston but another world of life and light. This is a fantastic beach to explore if you like to swim and sunbathe and one of the best to photograph. Walking up and down the boardwalk is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Add that to looking for and making images of the most amazing sandcastles and it is fantastic!

There will be hands-on, in-the-moment instruction, as well as daily group critiques. We will help you photograph the visual cacophony of beach life by making dynamic compositions that explode with light, shadow, and color and help you to shape those images into a compelling body of work through selection and sequence.

Topics covered:

  • Introduction to Stella’s photographic approach
  • Light and Moment
  • Shape and Form
  • Waiting, Looking, Turning Around
  • Arriving before and staying until after the action or event
  • Pre-visualizing the result
  • Sequencing importance
  • The Art of Editing

A weekend with Stella will recalibrate your ability to photograph the visual cacophony of daily life around you wherever you are, by making dynamic compositions that explode with light, shadow, and color. Our goal will be to help you tell a story with the moments found in Revere Beach. We will review photographs every morning and photograph together on the beach from 4:00-8:00pm during this three-day workshop. You will be welcome to spend the whole day at the beach if you like, of course, but for Stella, the light is the best after 4:00pm.

INSTRUCTOR

Stella Johnson is a photographer and educator known for her passionate and honest documentary projects. She received a Core Fulbright Scholar Grant to photograph in Mexico in 2003-2004, and Fulbright Specialist grants to teach in Mexico in 2006 and in Colombia in 2018. The University of Maine Press published her monograph, Al Sol: Photographs from Mexico, Cameroon and Nicaragua in 2008. Wild Greek Press published her second monograph, ZOI, in 2018. Johnson’s photographs have been widely exhibited in the United States and internationally.

Teaching has been central to Johnson’s work and has evolved organically from her innate disposition to develop long term, respectful relationships with individuals and communities. Her philosophy of teaching over the last 30 years has been in synch with her philosophy of photographing her fellow human beings. She has been invested in people’s lives, and has found that lifelong friendships have resulted from her insistence on introducing herself and interacting with the people she photographs. She infuses technical and visual aspects of the photographic arts with cultural concerns, encouraging students to make contact with and ask permission of people they photograph, as she always does herself.

A dedicated educator, Johnson held teaching positions at Boston University and Lesley University College of Art and Design. She has led domestic workshops in New York, Maine, Florida and California as well as in Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Greece, and Israel.

She was a finalist for the Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship, twice, in 2013 and 2018, Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50, twice, and a nominee for the Boston Foundation’s Brother Thomas Fellowship. Johnson’s work has received numerous honors including a New England Foundation for the Arts Cultural Collaborative Artist-in-Residence Grant.
