Overview:
July 18-20, 2025, join photographer and educator Stella Johnson for theInternational Sand Sculpting Festival at America’s First Public Beach, the three-mile-long Revere Beach.
Incredible sculptures, food trucks and fireworks are just some of the weekend highlights. In addition, Revere Beach is renowned for its’ local cast of characters lounging on the oldest boardwalk in the US and also for the best ‘lobsta’ rolls at Kelly’s. It is 30-minutes outside of Boston but another world of life and light. This is a fantastic beach to explore if you like to swim and sunbathe and one of the best to photograph. Walking up and down the boardwalk is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Add that to looking for and making images of the most amazing sandcastles and it is fantastic!
There will be hands-on, in-the-moment instruction, as well as daily group critiques. We will help you photograph the visual cacophony of beach life by making dynamic compositions that explode with light, shadow, and color and help you to shape those images into a compelling body of work through selection and sequence.
Topics covered:
- Introduction to Stella’s photographic approach
- Light and Moment
- Shape and Form
- Waiting, Looking, Turning Around
- Arriving before and staying until after the action or event
- Pre-visualizing the result
- Sequencing importance
- The Art of Editing
A weekend with Stella will recalibrate your ability to photograph the visual cacophony of daily life around you wherever you are, by making dynamic compositions that explode with light, shadow, and color. Our goal will be to help you tell a story with the moments found in Revere Beach. We will review photographs every morning and photograph together on the beach from 4:00-8:00pm during this three-day workshop. You will be welcome to spend the whole day at the beach if you like, of course, but for Stella, the light is the best after 4:00pm.
