Throughout the history of photography the Photo Essay has maintained a revered position by allowing the photographer to express, in a highly creative way, a specific theme. Immerse yourself in the artistry of visual storytelling with legendary photographer Anthony Friedkin in this exclusive Leica Masterclass workshop. Over two inspiring days, Friedkin, who is renowned for his own iconic Photo Essay’s, spanning many years and appearing in major museum collections will guide participants through the intricate process of creating a powerful and evocative Photo Essay.

Day One lays out a robust foundation, blending theoretical insights and defining what a successful Photo Essay is, encouraging active participation by showing stunning visual examples of the genre, ones that were accomplished by celebrated photographers from both past and present. This will set the stage for Day Two- where the specific details of accomplishing a compelling Photo Essay will be outlined and discussed, the editing process, potential book publishing and exhibiting.

10:00am-5:00pm May 4, 2024

Morning: welcome students to the class and lay out an overview of the course. Defining what a Photo Essay is/talk about the history of the Photo Essay

Noon: Lunch

Afternoon: Return to class-begin visual presentation of stunning Photo Essays by great photographers. Discussion on the different subjects covered Q&A session.

10:00am-5:00pm May 5, 2024

Morning: Open with a discussion on students’ ideas and what they have chosen to do an essay on. Then go over a list of all the significant elements needed to accomplish and achieve a successful photo essay.

Noon: Lunch

Afternoon: review student work and the book publishing process. Finishing with open Q&A.

INSTRUCTOR

Anthony Friedkin’s photography has been recognized internationally.  His work is included in the Permanent collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the George Eastman House in Rochester.  His photographs have been published in Japan, Russia, Europe and many Fine Art magazines in America.  He received a National Endowment of the Arts grant in 1977 and was given a special commendation by Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley for his contribution to Fine Art Photography in 1980.  He recently received an artist in residency grant from the city of Santa Monica for his photo essay on Surfers, along with his extraordinary photographs of Ocean Waves. 

 

During his career he taught photography at both U.C.L.A and Cal Arts College in Valencia. He has guest lectured at many museums, libraries and diverse educational institutions.  His exhibition photographs, created by him in his own darkroom, are included in numerous corporate and private collections.  

 

A native of Los Angeles, Anthony Friedkin has been documenting the social landscape with his In-depth photo essays for over fifty years.  By using his camera as a means of personal discovery, his full frame black & white photographs explore the many layers of reality.
