DESCRIPTION:

October 9-10, 2024 - Join us for the Michelin star experience at the Two Star Michelin restaurant Aska in New York City, as we take you into the world of Food Photography with professional food photographer,, Jim Sullivan

Led by Chef Fredrik Berselius and his team at Aska, students will have exclusive access to behind the scenes of this Michelin star restaurant during the workshop. Participants will get to photograph a professional kitchen as it prepares for service as well as photograph composed dishes.

At Grand Army Bar students will get to experience one of the best cocktail bars in the country. Participants will get to see how the cocktails are prepared and then have a chance to photograph them.

Jim will help you understand the aspects of food photography, the concepts and the techniques used in creating this art form. He will also be covering the business skills needed to be a successful freelance food photographer. Leading the workshop with his Leica SL, Jim will teach this workshop and connect participants with professionals across the industry.

While at each location, Jim will walk you through his usual set up and style of working. In addition, he will teach you how professional kitchens are run and how to work with the team.

  • Using available and strobe light to create beautiful food imagery.
  • Utilizing textures, colors and styling to provide the best approach to food photography.
  • Working on location with chefs and the kitchen staff before and during service
  • Discussing food styling for editorial and advertising work
  • Developing food image diversity for media, book, and online work

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:

Having a basic understanding of photography, camera settings, and being familiar with your camera is important. Students must be able to operate their camera's menu navigation and button system on their own.  Knowledge of photography basics & understanding of the exposure triangle required. Students do not need any prior lighting experience. Owning a Leica is NOT required. All camera brands are welcome. There will be a limited selection of Leica gear available for attendees to use.

INSTRUCTOR:

 

Jim Sullivan is a food and lifestyle photographer based in Southern California. He is a graduate of The Art Institute of California's Culinary Program and a self-taught photographer.  He has directed and produced several short films under his production company, Soigne Films.

 

His work has a strong focus in the culinary field as well as portraiture and lifestyle. Jim has photographed several cookbooks and has a new title “Asian Cuisine” set to be published in July of 2022. When not on location, he can be found at home cooking and spending time with his wife, daughter, and their little French Bulldog "Mochi".
