David Butow is a freelance photojournalist whose pictures have appeared in National Geographic, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, on the covers of TIME and Newsweek, and in many books and magazines worldwide. He began working professionally in the 1980s and has traveled to over two dozen countries to photograph social issues and news events such as the Los Angeles riots in 1992,  the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the Asian tsunami of 2004, and the Hong Kong democracy demonstrations of 2019. David's personal projects include more upbeat series like "Seeing Buddha." His work on U.S. politics beginning in 2016 and culminating at the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol resulted in the monograph "BRINK", published by Punctum Press of Rome. 


He has won awards from World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year International, The White House News Photographers Association, and others and was featured in TIME magazine’s Top Ten Photographs of 2018 and 2022. He has been a guest lecturer at Stanford University and the Rochester Institute of Technology, and his photographs have been exhibited at various venues including the United Nations Headquarters, the Asia Society in New York, and at Visa Pour L'image in Perpignan, France.
