Description:

Under the expert guidance of renowned photojournalist David Butow, participants will delve into strategies to hone their vision on-site and bring dynamic scenes to life. This workshop is designed to elevate photographers' personal style and skill by blending comprehensive instruction with hands-on practice in the vibrant cityscape of Los Angeles.

The workshop kicks off with an in-depth introduction on the first day, where David Butow shows examples from his work as a photojournalist, explaining his approach from preparation to pressing the shutter. This session will cover managing mental focus in complex and challenging scenes, how to anticipate movement, and sophisticated framing strategies, all while emphasizing the unique capabilities of Leica cameras and lenses. The discussion is designed to inspire the participants for photographing the next day.

On the second day, students will take to the streets of Los Angeles for an immersive on-location shooting experience (LOCATION TBA). This day is dedicated to applying learned techniques in real-world scenarios, capturing the dynamic energy of the city. Under David's mentorship, participants will look for interesting light and subjects, practice quick thinking, concentration and adaptability, all essential skills for engaged photography. Participants can work mostly on their own, or more closely with David and co-instructor Michael Baker from the Leica Akademie.

The workshop culminates on the third day with a comprehensive image review and critique session. This reflective session with David will discuss building a tight edit, post processing tips and help the participants “lock in” techniques that they’ve learned. The idea is to lay down a solid foundation that will inspire confidence and creative energy for the participants’ photographic journey.
