Description:

This winter join fashion photographer Mark de Paola, fashion journalist and stylist Alessia Caliendo, and Leica Akademie USA backstage for Milan Fashion Week. Experience and document first-hand the excitement in watching future trend and style come to life. Document the transformation process of the models from street to runway with the most highly regarded makeup artists, stylists, and hairstylists in the world. See the unseen!

After a group Milanese welcome dinner, kick off this program just before fashion week begins with an epic day of editorial fashion shooting on location with a full team in Milan, followed by a day experiencing the rich fashion culture of the city. Shoot the world-renowned street style in between your scheduled events, and capture iconic images backstage during your assigned shows.

During the backstage experiences participants will shoot shoulder to shoulder with Mark with highly exclusive access alongside world renowned art director, stylist, and fashion journalist Alessia Caliendo, one of Milan’s most highly regarded professionals in the fashion industry. Learn how to discover a sense of immediacy and intimacy in the fast paced backstage environment, and come away with images and an unforgettable experience that will resonate for a lifetime. This extremely intimate and highly exclusive week-long experience is sure to elevate and immerse you in de Paola’s world of high fashion photography both backstage and on location.

What To Expect

  • Weather: February/March is winter in Milan. Dress warm and pack layers.
  • Gear: The backstage environment is often in tight spaces. Pack the gear that you can keep on your person backstage.
  • Walking: Bring comfortable shoes that you can stand in for 3 hours backstage. In addition, Milan is an incredibly walkable city, about a 25 minute walk from one end to the other.
  • Wardrobe: Crew backstage must wear casual all black clothing.
  • Production Protocol: All participants will be thoroughly briefed on production protocol backstage and will be expected to follow all such guidelines in order to provide the most incredible experience. Call times for your assigned show or presentation will typically be two to three hours prior to show time, with the show lasting up to an hour. Prior to your assigned Paris Fashion Week show, you will meet with Mark de Paola and the production team to discuss backstage etiquette, pacing, etc.
  • This experience provides backstage access to two shows (not front of house/runway).
  • The final backstage show assignments will be provided 1 week prior to the start of the program. A full detailed schedule will be provided at that time from production.

INSTRUCTOR:

Mark de Paola is a director and photographer based in New York City and Los Angeles, best known for his wide-open shooting style. De Paola has had multiple covers for Vogue Spain and Mexico, as well as campaigns and commercials for Donna Karen, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Brioni, Neutrogena, La Perla, Sephora, and MAC Cosmetics to name a few.

 

Mark has directed nearly 700 television commercials in the fashion/beauty sector, including Anheuser-Busch (Superbowl), Sony, Kawasaki, Ford Motorsports, Ducati Motorcycles, Toyota, Giorgio RED Perfume (exhibited at MOMA, NY), and English Ideas Cosmetics amongst others. Mark’s fine art series “60 Seconds” (a series of nudes shot with handheld 60-second exposures) and “The Art of Backstage” (shot during NY Fashion Week) have been exhibited at the Leica Gallery LA, Boston, Tokyo, San Francisco, and Dali, China.

STYLIST:

Alessia Caliendo is a journalist and project manager with over 15 years of experience, specializing in the creation and management of content for international media, advertising campaigns, and exhibition projects. She has collaborated with prestigious brands and publications, showcasing a unique creative vision that seamlessly integrates storytelling and visual production.

 

Educated at IED - Istituto Europeo di Design (Rome) and Central Saint Martins in London, Alessia combines a strong academic foundation with a career that bridges the worlds of media and education. As a lecturer, she has led workshops and courses at renowned institutions such as Polimoda, IED, and SDA Bocconi, training students worldwide.

 

She is currently the Project Manager for Artribune Magazine, where she has strengthened its position as a cultural leader in Italy, with a particular focus on fashion, design and lifestyle.

She also completed the prestigious Visual Storytelling Program at ICP in New York, further honing her ability to craft engaging and innovative visual narratives.
