DESCRIPTION:

This five-day workshop is designed for all levels, from beginning to advanced, as there are two distinctly different agendas, with both agendas benefiting everyone.

One agenda is to teach you what it takes to get a good street shot. The other is to take an intermediate street photographer to the next level by tackling a special project, meant also to help in your search for a style.

The week will begin by looking at great street photography by talented contemporary photographers. Julia will analyze their images to point out what makes a great shot. It is her belief that you won’t get better as a street photographer — no matter how much you shoot — if you don’t understand what makes a good street shot. Julia talks extensively about seeing a photograph from top to bottom, left to right, and all the way back. All at once. You will learn how to see everything in your frame. You will learn to use a wide-angle lens well, to see in 3D, and to capture (visually interesting) layers in one single photograph.

FORMAT:

Each day is spent on location and in the classroom, where you will get daily inspirational, informative lectures and critiques. Those participants who want to be on the streets with Julia will go to specific locations for a few hours each day, while those of you who want to work on a project, will shoot on your own. Julia will have ideas for you, but she encourages you to come up with your own.

Perhaps you want to do a portrait series of the owners of the “Magazine Kiosks” still in existence in L.A.? Or spend a week with one of the “characters” on Hollywood Blvd., at home, on Hollywood Blvd., and everywhere in between? Maybe you want to do a series of window reflections on Broadway? Julia will guide you throughout the week on how to shoot a story, a documentary project, or a series. Director Daniel Sackheim, Julia’s co-director of Street L.A. Collective, will come in as a guest one day to discuss his cinematic approach to doing a series on the streets.

INSTRUCTOR

Julia Dean is a photographer, educator, writer, and founder and former executive director of the Los Angeles Center of Photography for 22 years. She is currently the director of The L.A. Project, a group of street, documentary, and news photographers whose mission is to tell the real story of the streets of L.A.

Collaborative projects with talented photographers is Julia’s passion. In the 1990s, she raised money to send six photographers around the world to document stories about child labor. This work resulted in two trips to the Capitol and a lot of press. Her current collaboration is through The L.A. Project.

Julia began her career as an apprentice to pioneering photographer Berenice Abbott. Later, Julia was a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York. She has traveled to more than 45 countries while freelancing for numerous relief groups and magazines. Her extensive teaching experience includes 40 years at various colleges, universities and educational institutions including the University of Nebraska, Los Angeles Valley College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Santa Monica College, the Santa Fe Workshops, the Maine Photographic Workshops, Oxford University, the Los Angeles Center of Photography, and the Leica Akademie.

For two decades, Julia concentrated on street photography around the world. For the past 13 years, street shooting in downtown Los Angeles has been her primary focus. She created and co-directs (with Daniel Sackheim) a street collective called Street L.A., which consists of a group of serious photographers who shoot weekly. Julia's work has been published in many magazines, blogs, and books.

Julia received a Bachelor of Science degree in photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master of Arts degree in journalism at the University of Nebraska, and is the author/photographer of the award-winning children’s book, A Year on Monhegan Island, published by Houghton Mifflin Co.
