DESCRIPTION:

Led by two uniquely accomplished photographers — veteran photojournalist, street photographer and educator Julia Dean, and Emmy Award-winning director and fine art photographer Daniel Sackheim — this four-day Leica Akademie workshop offers a fresh, dynamic approach to exploring street and night photography in New York City.

With backgrounds that span distinct creative worlds, Julia and Daniel bring complementary skills and visual perspectives to this workshop. Julia will share her expertise in shooting candidly on the street, while Daniel will demonstrate his techniques for creating images infused with the cinematic language of Noir. Their combined insights, hands-on instruction, and thoughtful critiques, will help you to sharpen your technical skills, helping you to expand your creative vision.

This is not a conventional workshop.

The goal of this workshop is to immerse you in an experience that allows you to see New York in ways you may never have experienced before.

You’ll venture to well-known sites — but always at the time of day or night that transforms them — and to a number of spots best described as off-the-beaten-path, that evoke the grit, atmosphere and layered stories of the city. We’ll teach you not just how to document the city, but to interpret it with intention, crafting evocative images that resonate with mood and meaning.

We will explore many of New York’s most eclectic districts, with a sense of timing and purpose, including:

  • Times Square at dusk, just as the last light seeps between the towering skyline
  • Washington Street in Dumbo by night, where the cobblestone and Brooklyn Bridge take on a cinematic glow
  • Coney Island, Brighten Beach, and the elevated train, captured during a dedicated daylong exploration of Brooklyn’s atmospheric neighborhoods
  • Halloween night in the Village, photographing the parade-goers at the West 4th Street Station, and riding a circular underground train loop for a uniquely immersive perspective
  • Later on Halloween, we will walk down the neon-drenched streets of Chinatown, alive with shadows and vibrant colors.

Because night photography demands a specialized approach, we will place a strong emphasis on equipping you with the techniques and creative strategies you’ll need to thrive in low-light conditions, allowing you to:

  1. Master exposure in challenging lighting.
  2. Work effectively with available light sources.
  3. Compose evocative emotionally resonant images that capture the essence of the urban nightcap.

Whether you’re drawn to the solitary poetry of empty streets or the pulsing energy of a city that never sleeps, this workshop is designed to refine your craft, deepen your artistic voice and inspire new ways of seeing.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS WORKSHOP:

This course is intended for advanced amateurs all the way up to experienced photographers looking to build upon their current base of knowledge and thoroughly understand how to expose at night. A full Itinerary will be sent upon enrollment.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

To state the obvious, as a street photography workshop we will be doing a lot of walking well into the evening hours. To get the most from this experience participants should be in good physical condition and come prepared for seasonal (at times inclement) weather.  If we are lucky, we will get some rain to shoot in.

Comfortable shoes, and a spare pair of socks are suggested.

Participants must bring (at least) one camera, a wide-angle lens and a tripod, extra memory cards and batteries, a laptop computer, card reader, jump drive.

Julia Dean is a photographer, educator, writer, and founder and former executive director of the Los Angeles Center of Photography for 22 years. She is currently the director of The L.A. Project, a group of street, documentary, and news photographers whose mission is to tell the real story of the streets of L.A.

Collaborative projects with talented photographers is Julia’s passion. In the 1990s, she raised money to send six photographers around the world to document stories about child labor. This work resulted in two trips to the Capitol and a lot of press. Her current collaboration is through The L.A. Project.

Julia began her career as an apprentice to pioneering photographer Berenice Abbott. Later, Julia was a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York. She has traveled to more than 45 countries while freelancing for numerous relief groups and magazines. Her extensive teaching experience includes 40 years at various colleges, universities and educational institutions including the University of Nebraska, Los Angeles Valley College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Santa Monica College, the Santa Fe Workshops, the Maine Photographic Workshops, Oxford University, the Los Angeles Center of Photography, and the Leica Akademie.

For two decades, Julia concentrated on street photography around the world. For the past 13 years, street shooting in downtown Los Angeles has been her primary focus. She created and co-directs (with Daniel Sackheim) a street collective called Street L.A., which consists of a group of serious photographers who shoot weekly. Julia's work has been published in many magazines, blogs, and books.

Julia received a Bachelor of Science degree in photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master of Arts degree in journalism at the University of Nebraska, and is the author/photographer of the award-winning children’s book, A Year on Monhegan Island, published by Houghton Mifflin Co.
