DESCRIPTION:
If some things never change, how do we make images that capture attention especially people who need to know what’s going on in their community or the world? How do we create images that will make people care?
As photo editors demand fresh and more intimate images every day this course will assist students to find a new way of telling old stories.
Maggie Steber brings her experience from working with photo editors to being Director of Photography at a major US newspaper to teaching students how a story can be collaborative between artist, subject, and audience. Creating a compelling narrative that will make others pay attention.
What should you know before signing up?
This course includes a prerequisite that students will submit 1-2 projects prior to the course with a limit of 20 images. Once registered, participants will be contacted with a personal link to submit their work via DropBox.
Additionally, students are encouraged to bring prints, 8x10in to 4x6in, of their for sequencing and discussion during the weekend.

- The process of writing an artist statement

Agenda:
Friday:
4:30pm-6:00pm – Meet & greet with students, course intro
Saturday:
10:30am-2:00pm – Students meet at Leica Store Boston for group critique of submitted work
2:00pm-6:00pm – Free time in Boston to work on personal assignments or scheduled 1-1 time with Maggie.
Sunday:
11:00am-12:30pm - Lecture on importance of storytelling and process of creating a statement.
12:30pm-1:30pm – Lunch
1:30pm-5:00pm - Discussion & Review of student artist statements.

This is an advanced level course built for those students looking to get serious about their photography. Those looking to eventually become published or work in journalism are encouraged to sign up. Enthusiasts hoping to submit their work to contests and grants will also find this course very helpful.
