Description:  

Participants will photograph trackside during a live race weekend, learning how to approach motion, composition, timing, storytelling, and the unique visual rhythm of motorsport.  

Alongside Al Satterwhite and Bruce Wodder, attendees will receive field guidance, creative direction, and opportunities for image review and discussion. This workshop is designed for photographers looking to sharpen their technical skills, build confidence in fast-moving environments, and create a compelling body of work from an unforgettable day at the track.

Al Satterwhite is an acclaimed American photographer whose career began in photojournalism before expanding into editorial, advertising, sports, celebrity portraiture, and fine art. His assignments have taken him across major publications including LifeNewsweekSports IllustratedTimeFortune, and Car & Driver, and his racing work brings a rare combination of speed, instinct, composition, and storytelling to the Lime Rock Park experience. 

Bruce Wodder is a photographer with more than four decades of experience across advertising, corporate, travel, and personal documentary work. Known for projects that explore atmosphere, place, memory, and the changing American landscape, Bruce brings a thoughtful and deeply experienced eye to the workshop, helping participants refine both their technical approach and their ability to build stronger visual stories. 

Agenda: 

Day One — Trackside + Paddock Storytelling at Lime Rock Park 

Morning — Arrival Option / Transportation Coordination 
Participants may choose to meet at Leica Store New York for group transportation to Lime Rock Park, or meet directly at Lime Rock Park. All attendees must confirm their preferred arrival option in advance so transportation, timing, and check-in can be coordinated properly. 

8:00 AM — Leica Store New York Departure 
Group transportation departs from Leica Store New York for Lime Rock Park. Participants using this option should arrive early enough to check in and load any personal gear before departure. 

10:45 AM — Lime Rock Park Arrival + Participant Check-In 
Participants arriving independently meet the group at Lime Rock Park during the designated arrival window. The Leica team will assist with check-in, orientation, credentials, and general logistics. 

11:15 AM — Welcome + Workshop Overview 
Introduction to Al Satterwhite, Bruce Wodder, and the Leica team, followed by an overview of the workshop goals, schedule, track access, safety guidelines, and expectations for the day. 

11:45 AM — Motorsports Photography Briefing 
Al and Bruce lead a discussion on photographing motorsport with intention, including anticipation, timing, composition, lens choice, movement, safety, and visual storytelling. 

12:30 PM — Lunch / Informal Q&A 
A casual lunch break with time for introductions, questions, camera setup discussion, and preparation for the afternoon shooting sessions. 

1:15 PM — Camera Setup + Leica System Review 
Recommended settings and field workflow for action photography, including autofocus approach, shutter speed selection, panning technique, lens choice, exposure considerations, and file management. 

2:00 PM — Trackside + Paddock Shooting Session I 
Participants begin photographing on location with guidance from Al, Bruce, and the Leica team. This session will focus on acclimating to the track environment, reading the rhythm of the action, and identifying storytelling opportunities both trackside and throughout the paddocks. 

4:00 PM — Trackside + Paddock Shooting Session II 
Continued guided shooting with emphasis on motion, timing, composition, environmental perspective, and building a fuller visual narrative of the day through action, atmosphere, details, drivers, cars, crews, and paddock moments. 

5:15 PM — Day One Field Wrap + Return Coordination 
Participants regroup, confirm return logistics, and prepare for departure from Lime Rock Park. 

5:30 PM — Return Transportation to Leica Store New York 
Group transportation departs Lime Rock Park for Leica Store New York. Participants who arrived independently may depart directly. 

 

Day Two — Image Review & Final Discussion at Leica Store New York 

10:00 AM — Arrival at Leica Store New York + Morning Recap 
Participants arrive at Leica Store New York for the second day of the workshop. The group reviews key takeaways from the Lime Rock Park shooting day and discusses initial impressions from the field. 

10:30 AM — Editing Workflow + Image Selection Session 
Al and Bruce guide participants through the process of reviewing their images, identifying strong frames, recognizing missed opportunities, and building a tighter edit from the trackside and paddock storytelling captured on Day One. 

11:30 AM — Individual Image Selection / Instructor Check-Ins 
Participants continue narrowing their selections, with informal guidance from Al, Bruce, and the Leica team. 

12:30 PM — Lunch / Informal Discussion 
Casual lunch break with time for questions, conversation, and discussion around each participant’s experience photographing motorsport. 

1:30 PM — Group Image Review + Critique 
Al and Bruce lead a constructive group review of selected images, offering feedback on timing, composition, motion, technical execution, storytelling, and overall visual impact. 

3:30 PM — Sequencing + Building a Stronger Visual Story 
Discussion on how to turn individual successful images into a more cohesive body of work, including action, atmosphere, details, portraits, paddock moments, pacing, and narrative flow. 

4:30 PM — Final Discussion + Takeaways 
Closing conversation. lessons learned, continued practice, editing discipline, and how participants can apply the experience to future motorsports, documentary, travel, and action photography. 

5:00 PM — Workshop Wrap + Farewell 
Final questions, closing remarks, and departure from Leica Store New York. 

 

Important Logistics Note: 
Day One takes place at Lime Rock Park, with the option to meet at Leica Store New York for transportation or arrive directly at the track. Shooting opportunities will include both trackside action and paddock storytelling throughout the day. Day Two takes place entirely at Leica Store New York and will focus on image review, editing, critique, sequencing, and discussion.

INSTRUCTOR

Al Satterwhite is a veteran photographer who has been published in major magazines such as Life, Look, Sports Illustrated, Time and many others. Published photographic books include The Cozumel Diary (adventures with Hunter S. Thompson in Mexico), Titans (Muhammad Ali & Arnold Schwarzenegger), the Racers (the Golden Age of endurance motor racing), Carroll Shelby (one of the most iconic racing giants of the 60s), Paul Newman- Blue-eyed Cool, The Rolling Stones Icons, Lights! Camera! Advertising! and Satterwhite on Color and Design.  He's currently working on two more books. 

 

Satterwhite’s stark black and white imagery and signature style of color and design are represented in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), George Eastman House, Polaroid Collection, National Museum of African American History and Culture, Ft. Wayne Museum of Art, as well as numerous private collections. Satterwhite’s iconic photograph of Hunter Thompson was included in the important Smithsonian show and book, American Cool. Satterwhite’s passion and curiosity in capturing images has expanded to motion pictures and television advertising. Seldom without a camera in hand, Satterwhite lives in New York City with his wife, Valery, and two Zen-Masters, both of them cats. 

INSTRUCTOR

Bruce Wodder spent over 40 years as a professional photographer and cinematographer, on assignment for advertising, editorial, sports and travel projects. As a filmmaker Bruce shot TV commercials, short films and occasional low-budget features. Bruce was also a partner in a stock photography production company, shooting both film and stills distributed through Getty Images.

 

When not on assignment, Bruce has always pursued personal projects. Some have been close to home, while others have taken him around the world to Iceland, Uzbekistan, Cuba, Antarctica, and high in the Himalayas, among other places. In 2013 Bruce directed and shot “Seeing Beyond the Moment”, a

documentary film on fine art photographer George Tice. After going through the festival circuit, it ended up on a little tv station called PBS.

 

Bruce and his wife live in rural Hunterdon County, NJ, where they raised their 2 children and a variety of cats and dogs.
