This immersive two-and-a-half-day hands-on workshop is designed for photographers eager to learn how to capture, develop, and scan film using modern techniques and tools.

Students will learn:

  • Film Camera Fundamentals: Understanding exposure, composition, and lighting techniques to confidently shoot with film.
  • Developing Made Simple: Step-by-step instruction on processing film at home using the Ars-Imago Lab-Box for efficient, mess-free development.
  • Digital Scanning & Processing: How to scan negatives with a digital camera and edit them using Negative Lab Pro for professional-quality results.

This workshop is ideal for photographers who already have a basic understanding of photography and are ready to explore - or rediscover - the art and process of film photography.

AGENDA:

Friday: Introduction to Film Photography

1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
- Overview of film photography and various film stocks
- How to properly load and handle film cameras
- Comparison of traditional vs. modern darkroom processes, with an introduction to the workflow used in class
- Overview of chemical types and materials used in film development
- Demonstration of the Ars-Imago Lab-Box system, followed by a hands-on film loading exercise

Saturday: Photowalk & Film Processing

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM — Photowalk
- Guided street photography session around LACMA and Leica Store Los Angeles
- Students will complete one roll of film based on a themed shooting assignment

1:00 PM – 5:00 PM — Film Developing
- Step-by-step guidance on loading and developing film using the Ars-Imago Lab-Box system
- Students’ rolls will be developed and set to dry by the end of class

Sunday: Scanning & Image Review

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM — Film Scanning and Digital Conversion
- Introduction to the hybrid workflow: scanning negatives using a digital camera
- Processing film scans with Negative Lab Pro
- Students will work in pairs to scan and convert their negatives

1:00 PM – 5:00 PM — Final Review & Discussion
- Group image review and critique session
- Open Q&A and discussion on workflow, results, and creative takeaways
- Students will share their best photograph from the workshop for group feedback

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This workshop is ideal for photography enthusiasts or experienced digital photographers interested in exploring the art of film photography and development.

Participants are not required to own a Leica film camera to join. Leica Store Los Angeles will provide a selection of Leica film cameras for hands-on use and experimentation.

Students should have a foundational understanding of photography concepts such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Students are advised to wear comfortable footwear suitable for photowalks and on-location shooting. This course is a rain or shine workshop. A light jacket is recommended in case of cooler weather. 

NOTE:


Students will retain the Lab-Boxes along with their developed roll of film and digital scans produced during the class.

INSTRUCTOR

Charlice Lin is a Los Angeles-based Fine Art Photographer who loves telling stories through photography. Growing up traveling vastly, she recognized at a young age her love for storytelling through the people she meets and the cultures she explores. Her documentary-style photographs not only trigger an emotional response, but also spark curiosity. By freezing and dramatizing seemingly everyday moments, she encourages viewers to look deeply within themselves. Through her photography, she wishes to highlight humanity and bring more understanding, compassion, and connection back to our deeply wounded world.

INSTRUCTOR

Kevin Fickling is a commercial photographer specializing in Sports, Fashion, and the automotive sector. His distinctiveness lies in his mastery of alternative cameras, film, and the 1850s-style wet plate collodion technique, resulting in uniquely captivating images.

Driven by his fascination with analog Leica cameras and the film aesthetic, Kevin established a fully-equipped film lab within his studio. This grants him complete creative freedom, enabling him to not only capture images but also develop, scan, and produce prints. This comprehensive approach sets Kevin apart, guaranteeing craftsmanship and artistic control in his work.
